Short History of Mining
The history of mining in Aninoasa essentially began in the year 1835 when geologists
confirmed the existence of good quality coal in Jiu Valley. In 1854 the Austrian
Law of Mines established the legal structure of what became the mining companies.
One of these entities was the "Societatea Brasoveana" which was granted
mining rights in Jiu Valley. In 1890 this Company created the Aninoasa mine
in the area of Iscroni.
The initial extraction effort began by opening a gallery
was opened in the western slope of the valley, along the main coal seam, at
the altitude of 670m. The digging of the gallery shaft continued through the
hill and stopped when it reached Valea Piscului. Along the eastern rib of the
valley the company dug another gallery at Orizontul "Dalja". In order
to transport all the Aninoasa-extracted coal, in 1892 "Societatea Brasoveana"
installed a 4,200m long cable transport system that ran from the Aninoasa mine
to the "Petrosani-Vest" mine. This steam engine-driven cable transport
system was made by the Vienna, Austria-based manufacturing company "Obach."
In 1914 a second cable system was added to supplement the first one.
The ownership of the Aninoasa mine changed when the "Societatii
Brasovene" went bankrupt. In 1894 administration of the mine passed to
the Salgotarjan Company that had its main office in Budapest. Ownership of the
mine changed again after December 1, 1918, when the mine became part of "Societatea
Petrosani", a company with Romanian capital that took over all mining activities
in Jiu Valley during the period between the two World Wars.
