City Facts
The city is located in the western portion of the Jiu Valley, at the foot of
the Retezat Mountainssurrounded by three districts: Hunedoara, Mehedinti, Gorj.
It is placed at 729 m altitude in the west side of Petrosani
depression and it has 12.000 citizens. To get in town you may enter on the Petrosani
- Vulcan - Lupeni - Uricani road, 27 km in length, known as DN 66A, the west
branch of the DN 66 road.
From Lupeni to Uricani there are 6 km and from Uricani
to Campu lui Neag 8 km.
Territorial, Uricani has a 25.141 ha area that means it
is on the first place as area in the district. Its limits is at east: Valea
Vacii, at west Retezat National Park, at north Custura top, Lazarul top (2282
m), Tulisa top(1782 m) and at south Coarnele top (1789 m) Siglaul Mare top (1682
m).
Geographical coordinates
of these territory are 23o10' meridian, east longitude and 45o25' parallel,
north latitude, which intersected in Uricani.
The relief: is a mostly
mountainous, Uricani is limited to the north by the Retezat Mountains and and
to the south by the Valcan Mountains.
The geograhy of the area consists mainly of mountains,
rivers, and streams.The mountains surrounding Uricani are part of the Middle
Carpathians. The ranges that border Uricani are the Valcan Mountains to the
south and the majestic range of the Retezat Mountains to the south.
The Retezat is a National Park which covers 11,000 ha in
area, and hosts a variety of unique flora and fauna.
